Datsun Sunny B10 1000 vs Peugeot 205 Rallye

First, a little introduction. The photos are sourced from Toyota's Museum Heritage Site and are images of the 2dr Datsun Sunny B10 1000.

Toyota quote "During the decade beginning in 1965, rapid economic growth raised the people's income level while innovations in mass production reduced manufacturing costs, boosting the growth of the passenger car market. The 2-door Sunny sedan that debuted in 1966 had a 3-speed column transmission, and the product line consisted of only deluxe and standard models (priced at ¥460,000 and ¥410,000, respectively). As the car was intended for the mass market, the vehicle's name was sought from the public. The Sunny contributed greatly to the popularization of automobiles, competing vigorously with the Toyota Corolla and other rivals that followed"

This post, however, was prompted by an MSN online article about factory fitted car graphics, in particular those fitted to sportier specification models, and please, hear me out on this, including Peugeot's rather wonderful 205 Rallye.

While the piece highlighted the four colour Peugeot Sport graphic seen on their Rallye models, it was one line of text that made my smile, and I'll quote "Peugeot's Super Lightweight 205 Rallye" 

At around 790kg, the diminutive and Super Lightweight 205 Rallye is some 140kg heavier than (my little) Sunny 1000, which like the images, is a white 2dr model.

At 102hp, the 205 Rallye does have the edge over (my) the Sunny's factory output of 59hp, never mind brakes and suspension, both ineffective on the Sunny.

OK, so percentage wise it's a lot more the having the edge over the A10 powered Datsun. Using the 205's power to weight ratio as my goal,  squeezing 84hp from the 988cc A10 engine is feasible, although if anyone has a cheap A12 engine for sale (or even better, an AY12 derivative, the factory produced 1300cc Cross Flow, twin spark, twin ignition, hemi head race engines, reputed to produce 220PS) it's a better starting point.
