Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Prototype

For type 7 Instagram  words and photos by Lorenzo Kikisch a very special car in the Porsche Transaxle story. Built in November 1980 by the Weissach development team, you’re looking at the original prototype for the exceedingly rare 924 Carrera GTS, and we got to spend some time drinking in its fabulous details.

While most of these 59 cars were built in Zuffenhausen on Porsche’s production line, this one was assembled by the motorsport division down the road where it could be hidden from prying eyes. It was also the sole example finished in Grand Prix White, against the Guards Red that came on all the others.

It spent most of its working life as a test and development car until it was put aside somewhere in Weissach and forgotten about for around a decade. Saved from being scrapped, it was completely rebuilt in the early 90s, preserving it for future generations.

As we celebrate 50 years of transaxle Porsches, it feels especially fitting to look back at what must be the peak of the 924 story.
