Death on Hog's Back

On January 22nd, 1959, aged just 29, and 3 months after becoming World Champion, , Mike Hawthorn "lost control" of his Jaguar on Hog's Back (the A3 near Guildford) and died.

It was a road he knew very well, in a car he knew very well that he'd raced on many occasions, his modified Jaguar Mk1 VDU811.

Jean Howarth, his fiancé at the time, believed he blacked out prior to losing control, having been racing with team owner Rob Walker driving his Mercedes 300SL. Hawthorn was very poorly at the time, having already lost a kidney, and previously blacking out.
