1935 Montgomery Greyhound JAP

Scrolling through Iconic Auctions Kempton Park auction, this Montgomery Greyhound  caught my eye. 

Not a well known brand outside of British bike enthusiasts circles, Montgomery Motorcycles was founded by Bill Montgomery in Bury St Edmunds in the early 1900s, initially producing sidecars but moving on to motorcycles in 1913.


This mostly original and very rare, Sammy Miller-restored 1935 Montgomery Greyhound with a 498cc JAP ohv engine, also features Druid girder forks and a 4-speed Albion gearbox, and was magazine-featured by Classic Motor Cycle. 


Estimated value is between £8000 and £10000, I expect it'll fetch beyond the upper value.

The Don Lee Special - 1934 Alfa Romeo P3 Tipo B

The Don Lee Special, or more accurately, the 1934 Alfa Romeo P3 Tipo B, one of the Don Lee Specials. Shot at Goodwood, the 83rd Members Meeting during qualifying. I was very fortunate to be gifted a guest ticket by one of the competitors.  Designed by Vittorio Jano, powered by an 8-cylinder engine that was supercharged by two compressors producing up to 265 hp, depending on the specification. The differential was mounted directly behind the gearbox, so that the two drive shafts could be guided sideways past the driver to the rear. This allowed for a lower seating position and improved road holding. Weighing 680kg it is recognised as the first genuine single seat Grand Prix car. The P3 Tipo B, built from 1932 onwards, was the most successful racing car of the Milanese brand before the 2nd World War, driven in period by such racing legends as Rudolf Caracciola and Tazio Nuvolari. Sold by  Pendine , and raced at the 72nd  Goodwood Members Meeting  by the late, great  Jochen Mass . Simon Diffey, the brains behind ‘Gold Member’, acquired the restored rolling shell from BMW specialist BM Technika. Diffey wanted to build a 2002 to European Group One ‘all steel, all glass’ specification for himself and his son to race, creating a homage to the privateer BMW racers of the early 1970s. From bare metal, the shell was painted in a Warstiener livery that would have slotted into the grid at Spa in 1972. The engine came from Snitzer, with a reconditioned Lester Owen head from Historic BMW specialist Laranca. Mass Racing originally built the engine, and after a few seasons of racing have just completed a complete refresh. The gear box was rebuilt by JP Rave Boxes Rob Riding. BMW Group - Classic  only give the 700 Sport a few short sentences in their archive pages, which is a shame. The modern BMW Touring Cars owe their lineage to this diminutive little twin cylinder race car. The 700 became the first saloon car to wear the famed  CS designation , touring car dna. BMW introduced the 700 at the 1959 Frankfurt Motor Show, representing a change in direction compared to its contemporary Baroque Angel models that aspired to conquer the luxury market. The diminutive 700 compact car was the first BMW built with a steel monocoque structure and featured a rear-engine design, borrowed from the R67 motorcycle. A five-year production run that ended in 1965—with some 188,000 examples built—is credited for saving BMW from going bust after notably losing money on every 507 sold.

  From the BBC archives, "The Race of the Power Bikes" was a BBC documentary covering the 1973 Formula 750cc motorcycle race on the Isle of Man. The 1973 Isle of Man Formula 750 TT race was a historic event, marked by the performance of Peter Williams and his John Player Norton motorcycle. Williams' victory was a significant achievement, as it marked the first time Norton had won the TT race in 12 years.  His lap record of 107.27 mph set the second-fastest-ever lap of the Snaefell Mountain Course, showcasing his exceptional speed and skill on the motorcycle. The race was a testament to the dominance of British bikes in the TT, with Williams' Norton team emerging victorious against the competition of powerful, twin-cylinder motorcycles. The event remains a highlight in the history of motorcycle racing, celebrated for its speed, skill, and the legacy of the Isle of Man TT.
